I’m teaching a special section of freshman comp this semester whose primary texts are Plato’s Republic and Boethius’s Consolation of Philosophy. Because many folks aren’t as excited about such books as I am, I send out an email to all those enrolled about a week before classes start to let them know and to give them a head start on drop/add. Fairly early in the class I let the students interview me after they interview and introduce each other, and I told both sections that I used to preach regularly and still do to fill pulpits.
Today after class, a freshman who had self-identified as Christian talked to me after class and said something like she assumed, upon hearing that I was teaching philosophy, that I was an atheist.
Discuss.
